Memories of MC year for all team members are, for sure, a lot connected with barbecuing in a small park near MC office and Akker Brygge. This year 16th of May was considered the opening day to continue tradition in 2007.
The weather was dull for whole week and not stable this day which, MC hopes, was the reason of not many people from a long list invited showed up. So Børge, Viktor, Annika and also Flora, intern from Hungary, had a very nice chilling and relaxing evening consuming first in 2007 meat grilled outside. Later this evening a small party took place in MC apartment and continued in the town. Thanks, guys for showing up!:)

But this was only a small pre-party before May, 17 - National Day of Norway.

On May, 17, 1814 the Constitution of Norway was signed declaring Norway to be an independent nation. Nowadays it is considered to be the biggest holiday in Norway. To my observations, this holiday is of highest importance to all Norwegians, at this days everybody wears nice clothes - traditional ones or suits, people greet each other with the same words as ones for someone's birthday - "gratulerer med dagen". It's a day of appreciation of history, traditions, successes Norway achieved as country nowadays, day of appreciation of your country. Norwegian are very patriotic people, the fact that I really like about this nation.

Preparation for the holiday stats from buying small Norwegian flags and ribbons for clothes which later you can see on everyone's chest and in hands. The night before - May, 16 is the party night all over Norway as at the same time students are finishing school and are celebrating Russ (graduation - more on that later).

The day of 17th of May is famous for its Children parade when all of the schools have young representatives marching towards the castle with music, flags and waving to the Royal family. I was standing, I think, for quite a time observing kids and people in the parade. I like it a lot - no army or military forces as in Ukraine or Russia, just kids - future of this country. Also it was really cool for me to see the diversity of Norway - kids of different ethnic origin - asian and arab-looking, africans and, of course, lots of blond and blue-eyed nordic looking children, most of them carried Norwegian flags, lots were dressed in national clothes - bunads and also some in Sami ones. Living in Western Europe and especially in such a multicultural city as Oslo made me, fore sure, appreciate diversity even more.

Then, together with Lars and Annika, we took a nice walk towards the harbour where we sat om the wooden stairs near the water, watched lots and lots of people in restaurants on boats and just passers-by, eating very expensive ice-cream:) This day it is traditional to eat ice-cream and Norwegian hot-dogs (sausages in in thin lumpa bread).

We took another walk to the centre of the city... Amazingly warm weather, smiling and happy people... I have never seen so many people in Oslo:)))) Got a bit nostalgic for the crowd after time spent in Kyiv metro:)

After enjoying some time more we headed off to our apartment to have a "shrimp" dinner. Apparently this is also some kind of tradition to eat shrimps on May, 17. Don't know really why but I liked it, especially with lemon juice and mayonnaise:))

In general it was a great day - amazing cultural experience of Norway which, to my mind, everyone should be a part of, if, of course, by any chance in Oslo or other Norwegian city at this day:)) Two more things to share and tell about. Russen or the graduation of schoolstudents.

Starting from late April you can see young people dressed in special read or blue trousers with lots of pockets and writings made with marker on them. Close to middle of May the number of such guys and girls increase. They buy a big buses with generators and big audio systems on it, dance on the top of such buses or just stop on the street and do it in front of it. Walking around the city we saw quite a few guys and girls in lots of corners of Oslo - they for sure had a nice party night before:))

Bunad is traditional Norwegians clothes. It looks very old fashioned and sometimes funny (especially male ones). The type varies from the region of the country, so you can actually see where the family of a person wearing a certain type of bunad comes from. Some evening we had a discussion about bunad and how it influences the sexuality of girls as lots of young girls have it and wear it on May, 17. the coclusion was reached by all the guys - girls in bunad (and for me in generally in national clothes , at least in Ukrainian, for sure) look very sexy:).

On May, 22 it is a year for me since I moved to Norway. Reflecting a bit on my staying, I must day that it has been an incredible year of self-development for me. And I thank Norway and AIESEC in Norway for this opportunity. Proud to be a bit Norwegian:))))

MAD project travel (by Annika)

In April, all the participating countries in the Make A Difference project met in Beijing for a partner meeting. So there were many nationalities; Susan and Echo from China, Daniel from Bangladesh, Dalia from Ghana (originally Lithuanian) and Camilla and Annika from Norway from Norway resp Sweden).

We had a 3 day meeting, discussing the upcoming year's project which starts in July. How we can make it the best possible for all participants and all AIESECers. One of the aims of the partner meeting is also to create better ties and connections between the countries, something we definitely did! :)

We also got the opportunity to see Beijing, who is an city where you can see the preparations for the Olympics everywhere you go!

MAD Trip

After the partner meeting, yours truly had the great privilege of visiting all the Norwegian MAD participants in Shanghai, Dhaka (Bangladesh) and Accra (Ghana). Having around 3-4 days in each country, this was the most intense travel i've ever done, and definitely the coolest!!!

I started off by visiting Benedicte in Shanghai where she works for a Law firm with client relations. A part from evaluations of the internship and meeting with the company, we also got to attend a seminar arranged by Bergen Chamber of Commerce regarding Norwegian companies who were interested in investing in China. After an interesting day, we also joined at a dinner sponsored by DNV and actually met a TN taker from Norway! the world is tiny sometimes;)

In Bangladesh, Frøydis and Mari are doing their internship and enjoying it! the heat hit me (but not at all like in Ghana...) but we had lots of nice time, even though our sight seeing got disruppted by unforeseen reasions;)

Scandinavian Chill-out

Being a part of AIESEC in Norway means to be a part of AIESEC in Scandinavia (Greater Scandinavia here) as you get to work quite close with other Scandinavian MCs during XPros, then preparing ScaLDS together and making it happen, IC, attending conferences in neighbouring countries. But there's one event that truly bring the spirit of Scandinavians together (apart from Nordic circles:) - and it is the Scandinavian Chill-out Weekend.

Due to the general "busy" life we were not being able to meet in November-December but this weekend in April it did happen in Stockholm.

Dates - April, 27-29

So it was 3 days of chilling-out, sharing about the year and experiences gained, asking about and looking for the opportunities in the future, beer drinking, intimate movies watching, FIFA tournament on XBOX, basketball and burnball playing (ask Swedish MC about the rules on that game), barbecuing, walking in the city, going for a club - so in total it was a really nice weekend in a company of great people. Frankly speaking, taking into consideration a really excessive AIESEC Experiences of MC member in Norway, we can say that the network and connections between Scandinavian MCs (mostly unofficial ones) are the strongest among whole AIESEC Network in the world - Nordic circle and "We're, we're Nordics" are famous far beyond borders of the Greater Scandinavia:)) If you want to experience this - connect with Scandinavians during conferences and apply for MC next year:)))

National Conference 3

Traditionally, this time "National Conference 3" was held in Oslo from 13th to 15th of April.
This year the format of the conference was changed in order to cover all type of members in AIESEC. Main objectives of NC3:

provide members with motivation and knowledge necessary for their next stage of AIESEC XP;
bring the network of AIESEC in Norway together.

Thus we had 4 parallel tracks during the conference:
- Planning track for incoming EBs (run by Lars and Magnus)
- H4TF for people leaving organization (run by Zara)
- Soft Skills track for new and experienced members (run by Børge and Annika)
- OPS track for exchange participants (run by Viktor)

At the end of March newly elected MC members of AIESEC in Norway - Camilla, Kenneth and Kirsten went to Serbia to have their first MC international XP and be a part of "EuroXPro 2007".

Having fun while traveling, experiencing the beauty of great Slavic country, meeting other MC members from all over Europe, participating in workshops and sessions, mingling with local population, executing the best AIESEC roll-call ever and showing new one (picture to the right) - this is only the part of experience of being MC member!!!
And in the end being so overwhelmed with experiences tranferred into the non-opportunity to express it on the blog by themselves.

Empowering experience!

Just after IPM, my dear friend and colleague Aron from Sweden approached me and asked if I wanted to be the chair of Empower 2007! This was a question that I wasn't really prepared for, but for me it was a great honour to actually be asked and for me it was sort of a good symbol of appreciation from working with AIESEC Sweden that I just had to be extremely happy for, so I threw everything out of my hands and said yes right away.

After a hectic period home in Norway, I have to admit that my self confidence in me as a chair before I left was not the best one, since this was a pretty new role for me, so I tried to put my self through the same process as before IPM to build up my confidence by utilizing my competitive instinct so when I arrived the MC flat on Monday evening my blood was pumping around in excitement.

After a couple of days with a lot of fun and conference preparations in the facilitators team we were ready to kick start the conference, kicking of the Opening Plenary with an insane energy, were all the Swedish LCs just competed from the start (who's the loudest LC!).

From the Opening Plenary and on till the end of every session, party and the conference itself, the energy level was insane and people just had an amazing time. Looking back this is probably one of the most successful conferences I've been a part of, and I could probably spend a lot of time telling about all the different moments, but that would take ages. But since I left the MC flat last Monday, receiving a lot of appreciation from Swedish delegates etc, I've asked myself, what made this conference successful and what makes conferences in general successful? And here are some of my reflections:

Don't underestimate your own story as a leader: One thing that stroked me during the conference is that people actually really appreciate that you're sharing your experiences, your personal stories and the development of you. I wasn't really aware of this before this conference, but if I look back at the time when I joined AIESEC I was extremely inspired by the experienced and successful AIESECers... So why can't people be the same by my and our story.

Don't underestimate the power of the others story: People don't only get inspired by your story (obviously), but they also get inspired by other stories, make sure that delegates get time to share their story with each other. This makes sure that people get to know each other on a better and deeper level.

Have fun: When you're making and delivering the conference, it doesn't really matter in the end if you spent 10 hours of making a visual effect in the ppt, if you don't have time to have fun and to show that you're having fun. If you as a facilitator don't have fun, you're not able to show that things are fun and if you're not showing that things are fun, delegates will not think its fun. And then it doesn't matter if you spent 10 hours on a visual effect. During Empower we as a facilitator team made some random movies, thank you Chafic for pulling the fun atmosphere on an even higher level. You can see one of them here...

Don't take yourself seriously: If you need the correct and fun atmosphere it's important to not take yourself seriously. I'm a typical person that could tend to do so, but I decided before Empower that I would like to leave my seriousness back home in Norway. So I'll guess you'll never see anyone dance the Grandiosa dance "Full pakke" more stupid than me, but apparently people liked it.

In the end, this is just thoughts I had to share, if you have other thought to add on this please share with me.

In the end I just hope that all Norwegian AIESECers is just as excited as me for the coming week and NC3, and we together will for sure make NC3 just as empowering for me, you and all the others!

My Birthday

Today was a really nice day... Definitely mostly coz I have a birthday today:) also coz every day is special in its way. I turned 23... Have lots of thoughts about that but will post later on this, need to gather them and add some new. Got lots of greetings from my friend by sms, mail, posts on facebook, icq messages and some calls. Thank to all of you:)))) Also got really nice presents from my teammates in MC. You can see picture . Yes, it's everything a man can want from this life - bottle of vodka and jelly cake in the shape of female breast:))) Awesome present:))) I love it. Practical and symbolic:) Also went to TGI Friday's, I was paid the meal (also nice present considering prices for meals in restaurants in Norway, got two balloons and 10 EUR discount, not bad too) At home opened at last present my girlfriend gave me 1,5 weeks ago in St. Petersburg. Thanks a lot!!! It's really awesome!!!))

Make A Difference is an exchange project between AIESEC in Norway and partnering AIESEC countries - Bangladesh, Ghana and Mainland of China, in cooperation with FK Norway.

The objective of the project is to increase business opporunities between Norway and the South countries as well as contributing to a cultural experience for the participants and their local society.

Through thorough preparation and a focus on bringing the learning points of the internship back to the home society, this project is an amazing opportunity for all participants and for AIESEC as an organisation.

Experiencing myself and Egypt part 1!

Since I started in the role as MCP, I've realized more and more how fortunate and lucky I am, how much I actually learn in this role and how many opportunities I've got. Spending almost 3 weeks in Egypt on IPM (International President Meeting), gave me a lot of time to think, talk do dear friends and MCP colleagues and taking part of the AIESEC International elections. Though the elections didn't go my way this time, it gave me a huge learning experience and it opened my eyes for all the other opportunities I have beside AIESEC International. Meeting and talking to all my MCP friends around the world made me realize how powerful the network really is and what position I'm in right now. What if all our people on this earth could experience something similar!!!??

Being in Egypt for the first time, meant that I had to experience the country as well. The whole thing starting off at the airport with a bunch of people storming towards me wanting to help me with whatever I needed help for, they probably thought; "this guy has a lot of money, I want some of them!" After a couple of hours of sleep I had a new experience at the Norwegian embassy where I was invited for a coffee and got a ride with the diplomat car!

After that our Egyptian trip and exploration started, we experienced small hidden restaurants, bars, belly dancing, surfing on the Nile etc in Cairo. The other day we had our own taxi driver that took us into the pyramids, papyrus museum, local perfume shop, horse riding around the pyramids and much more. The thing we didn't realize was that this driver ripped us of full time, so he and all his friends in the different shops, owning the horses etc probably had one of their most profitable days ever!

After one experience there comes another experience: Then we jumped on the night bus to Dahab (a city on coast of the Sinai Peninsula, towards Saudi Arabia). And a ride with the night bus in Egypt is slightly different from Norway. We started of the ride watching an Arabian movie on the small TV followed by a 4 hours long and loud Arabic prayer/song on the radio. Within these hours we had passed several of all the checkpoints where they checked our passport. In Dahab we spent some time relaxing enjoying the sun, doing some snorkelling etc. The Snorkelling was just wonderful, being able to swim in February as in the same time seeing all the types of fish that you only think exists in movies and dreams.

After 2 days of relaxing and mental preparation of the AI elections we had a plan to climb Mount Sinai on our way back to Cairo. Coming there in the middle of the night (you climb it to see the sunrise), we realized that we had a shortage of time to make it to IPM as it was an extreme low temperature to be in Egypt (around 0), so we cancelled the climb and decided to take the 6am bus in the morning. So we had to find a place to sleep, so we took the first and best option ending up on a thin mattress on a stone bench in a stone cabin for 40NOK, before we took the 6am bus with the same 4 hour Arabic prayer on the radio, ending up in Cairo and the IPM pre meeting.

Experiencing Egypt!

I love my role as MCP, and one of the things that I really appreciate is the role of taking part in the Global Plenary and attending IPM (International President Meeting). So currently me and the MCPe Magnus are here and while having intense days and nights we also have time to enjoy and have a good time. For me personally it's also a very intense learning experience, since I'm also running for director in AIESEC International. I'm done with the speech, Q&A and the interview so now it's all about getting some positive result tomrrow evening (Friday). Here you'll find some pictures from the conference and my stay in Egypt!

Zara's Scandinavian Tour

Early last week I returned from a well-deserved vacation! My sister arrived from Australia for a European adventure, so she and I travelled for a week in Sweden and Finland. We stayed at the MC house in Stockholm (thanks Lana, Aron and Anton for hosting us!), and saw the Nobel museum, Wasa museum (the Swedes sure know how to turn a boat that only sailed for a grand total of 20 minutes into a whole-day museum experience), the Royal Palace, and city museum. A highlight was going to the Absolut Ice Bar, where the bar, glasses and all the furniture is made of ice. We also visited the Swedish MC office, and I finally saw the infamous gym :).

The next stop was Helsinki, where we again stayed in the MC flat (thanks Shreya and Jani!). First stop was shopping and the cathedral, before checking out the MC office. (With our own office being re-vamped, I was keen to see how other Scandi ones look!) I also had coffee with the LCP who recruited me into AIESEC! I last saw Kim at the beginning of 2004 when she left for an MC term in Finland and is back there again, so it was amazing to catch up with her on the other side of the world! Shreya, my sister and I then flew north to Roveneimi, where we visited Santa's Village, went sledding, got our reindeer drivers' licences (random) and unsuccessfully attempted to see the northern lights (aurora boring-alis!). I also had a couple of firsts: I ate reindeer and tried cross-country skiing (though I feel bad that I lost my skiing virginity to somewhere other than Norway). And now I'm back in the MC office… who needs reindeer and skis when you have internships and learning :P.

Cool news coming from eXchange Corner!

Last week AIESEC BI hosted new intern coming from China on MAD internship - Kelvin Woo. He will work for "Teknologisk Insitutt" and will stay in Norway till the end of October. People who joined for intern beer last Thursday had a chance to meet Kelvin already.
From MC sides we want to say big THANKS to Christian Anvik, VPICX in LC BI, for the great job done to ensure Kelvin has a proper accommodation when he is in Norway.

Another intern will be coming to Oslo in two weeks - Flóra Földi from Budapest, Hungary. Flora was in Oslo on Friday and successfully passed her interview at "Ringnes ASA". She will be an HR intern from March till August 2007.

Re-arrangement of the office...

Yes... we finally did what we've been talking about since June! and what possibly no MC has dared to do for the last couple of years (potentially since we moved in to the office in the mid-90's)... We have re-arranged the office dramatically, causing shock and horror into the eyes of former MC members and slight confusion in visiting members. And it has potential for both shock and confusion and who knows what when MC members who were not in the process (Zara because of trip to Sweden and Finland) returns next week... Pictures are here:

Sweden - Norway killer day competition!!

Yesterday we had a kick ass Killer day, Sweden vs. Norway for the first time ever! So many companies were contacted and Norway managed to book the amazing amount of 34 meetings in just one day!!! Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to grant us the victory and we say congratulations to AIESEC Sweden for booking 43 meetings! Well done, guys!

However, looking nationally, we on the MC can do nothing except bow our heads for AIESEC TØH! They managed to book the amazing number of 20 meetings!!! We are so impressed! And looking forward to see you turning these cool meetings into some kick ass internships ;)

And finally, it's time to announse the winner of the Killer Day 2007... the person who booked 10 meetings all by himself... drum roll please... for...

Bjørn Olav Holten from AIESEC TØH!

Bjørn Olav has by his persistance and really good sales skills managed to book almost a third of AIESEC Norway's meetings (with the support from his LC) and is well deserved of the cool price, which is a sales coaching session with no one else but Kristin Omreng, MCP of AIESEC in Norway 2000-2002 and Director for WENA in AIESEC International in 2002/2003, now working as Teamleader for Research in Hartmark Consulting AS (and appreciated speaker at Star Sellers Weekend).

Congratulations again and I hope you enjoy the coaching session.

We on the MC would like to thanks all individuals and LCs who participated in the Killer Day, we hope you enjoyed it too, and that you get to go to so many cool meetings now!

For two weeks in January, the MC office had a new crowd for a while. These were the Norwegian SNs who are going away on Make A Difference project! They were 5 cool persons, ready to head out to Ghana, Bangladesh and China for an amazing 9 month experience on their internships.

Mari and Frøydis are going to Bangladesh
David and Linn Kristin are heading for Ghana
Benedicte will have her internship in Shanghai, China.

During the prep sem we discussed culture shocks, AIESEC, Fredskorpset, how it is to live in an other country, had presentations about Ghana and Bangladesh and a nice evening out at Mucho Más. And we talked, and shared, and talked, and discussed... and had lots of fun and laughter.
